We spoke with one of Apiari’s co-founders, Yi-Hsian Godfrey, to learn more about the brand and what new parents can expect at the New York Baby Show.
For someone unfamiliar with Apiari, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Apiari believes that new parents need to be cared for just like their newborn. We provide short-term, flexible care and support so that parents can truly live our mantra of “rest, restore and revive.” Apiari is a single platform for parents to book in-home maternal and baby care, housekeeping, cleaning services and daily family meal services. We also have a network of prescreened lactation consultants, visiting pediatricians and mental health experts to provide help during one of the most challenging times of parenthood.
Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
Apiari was born out of three working Brooklyn moms’ shared belief that parents today are not getting the help they need. When Ming, one of our co-founders, had her second child in 2016, she spent a long time looking for short-term help with her children and chores. The problem, she found, was that the “Mary Poppins” of the world only wanted long-term, full-time gigs, and those available on a short notice for the part-time jobs did not quite meet her exacting standards. Our other co-founders, Chevi and Yi-Hsian, had encountered similar problems and felt strongly that parents need the help to rest and restore during this important phase in their family’s lives. Hence the birth of Apiari!
What are the most popular and/or newest services from Apiari?
Our most popular service is housekeeping. Even second-, third-, and fourth-time parents, realize that what they need most is an extra set of hands to help cook, clear the table, do the dishes and laundry and tidy up after and play with the other children. These responsibilities typically fall on the stay-at-home parent, in many cases, mom who is on maternity leave (and should be spending her time recovering and bonding with the new baby).
What sets Apiari apart in the maternity and baby world?
Our emphasis is seamless, customized care for the family (not just the birth mom). Compared to other parts of the world, too much emphasis is placed on the newborn in the U.S. and not enough on supporting the foundation of the family (the parents). Thus, Apiari offers the following in a single platform:
Single Point-of-Contact: Clients work and communicate directly with us. Through our client intake session, on-going communications and in-home servicing, we learn about the family’s preferences and needs. We will then share information as needed with each care provider that attends to that family to ensure consistent and seamless services.
Unique Matching: We match clients and attendants based on their respective profiles and needs. For example, if a client has twins, we match them with an attendant that has experience with multiples. If a client needs someone to spend more time with a toddler, we send a toddler-loving provider with lots of toddler care experience. We save parents hours of researching, interviewing and coordinating help by thoroughly vetting our care providers and even trying them out in our own homes.
Time (and Cost) Efficient: Apiari schedules most care providers in 4-hour blocks so that you don’t have to have them in your house for a full day, every day (unless you want to). Clients can dial up or down the services based on their schedules. Some clients use us in-between grandparent visits as help coverage. Others use us more frequently to supplement family help (such as with night nurse and cleaning services).
Comprehensive Full Services: As part of a proper recovery, we don’t want our clients to lift a finger! Our cleaners come with cleaning supplies and our night nurse brings her own bedding.
Direct Access to Other Experts: In-home and virtual 24/7 pediatricians, lactation consultants and mental health professionals. While we don’t offer these services directly, we have pre-vetted our partners’ services so our clients don’t need to.
What can parents expect from Apiari at the New York Baby Show?
Expecting parents can get a free 15-minute consultation to help them craft a postpartum recovery plan suited to their needs. We are also raffling away one of our more popular packages – our Basic Trio package – (a $525 value) that includes 1 housekeeping session, 1 night nurse session and 1 meal service delivery (2 meals for 2 adults). We will also be giving away a different product gift basket every hour of the show (12 baskets in total).
