To learn more about Dentistry for Children, we spoke with Rivka Markel, the practice’s manager.

For someone unfamiliar with Dentistry for Children (DFC), how would you describe the practice’s mission and core offerings?

Providing a positive and enjoyable dental experience is our main goal. We believe that a child’s early dental experience will determine how their dental care will be pursued as an adult. We want to give children positive experiences so that they can not only have a healthy mouth as a child but a lifetime of oral health. Entrusting us with a child’s dental care is a privilege, and we strive to meet parents’ expectations. Our office is designed to treat children from infancy through adolescence, including children with special needs, and every child is treated as an individual. Communication is so important in creating family-centered care. We spend time with the patients and with the parents to discuss the patient’s oral health, treatment needs, home care, and addressing any and all concerns the parents and patients may have.

Tell us about the practice’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?

Dentistry For Children started in 1981 by Dr. Ken Markel solely as a pediatric dental practice. Over the years, Dr. Ken started to take in general dentists, becoming a family practice and a true part of the neighborhood of the Upper West Side. We are so happy to share that we have been seeing the children of the children of our practice!

What are the most popular and/or newest services from DFC?

  1. We are available to see kids for cleanings and check ups 7 days a week. On Saturdays and Sundays, we are open from 9 AM ’til 2 PM.
  2. We have the newest technology in digital x-rays, including a new state-of-the-art x-ray system that takes 3D x-rays.
  3. We offer Invisalign and ceramic braces through our orthodontists.
  4. The newest service we will offer soon is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), which is FDA-approved to treat dental sensitivity and has been found to stop the progression of cavities. We also have the classic fluoride varnish, which helps strengthen teeth and also helps stop the progression of cavities.
  5. And, we offer a dental membership for families without insurances. This membership gives you about a 50% discount on preventive treatment and 20% off restorative and orthodontic procedures.

What sets DFC apart from other pediatric dental practices in NYC?

We have two locations that are part of our Dentistry For Children practice – one on the Upper West Side and one on the Upper East Side – through which we are able to provide our high-quality care all across Manhattan. Our Upper West Side location is part of a family practice, which makes us very unique. The whole family can receive dental care in one comfortable, familiar place, with specialists appropriate to the family member’s age, stage of development, and dental needs. In addition to pediatric dental specialists in the office, we have adult dentists, orthodontists, and a periodontist, as well as a network of referring specialists, all working together to give families the best, most comprehensive care possible. We also have video games in the waiting room and televisions in the operatories, both of which are helpful for the young (and older) patients to relax and unwind before, during, and after their appointments.

What can parents expect from DFC at the New York Baby Show?

To meet the great staff at DFC, learn about early childhood dental care, what to expect over the first few months and years of childhood, how to keep your child’s mouth and body as healthy as can be, ask any questions or address any concerns about early childhood dental care, and, of course, free toothbrushes! AND we will give away some memberships!
