For someone unfamiliar with the French-American School, how would you describe the school’s mission and core offerings?

FASNY develops globally literate, multicultural lifelong learners through a unique program that integrates French, American, and International curricula.

We educate students to understand, contribute to and thrive in an interdependent world. FASNY holds its students to the highest standards of academic excellence, supports them in their personal development and fosters a spirit of inquiry, service, and social responsibility to the environment and the global community

What’s the background of the school? When did it start? How has it evolved over time?

FASNY was founded in 1980 with three teachers and 17 preschool students. It has since then it has grown to become a Nursery (3 years old) through 12th grade international school, with over 850 students on three campuses. FASNY’s mission to educate internationally minded students occurs within the context of a track record of academic excellence. FASNY’s students thrive in their studies after high school in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and elsewhere in Europe. Since granting its first French baccalaureate degree in 2009, FASNY has each year achieved 100% success on the Baccalaureate, with more than 90% of the students passing with honors, while the average SAT Scores for the class of 2015 were 647 in Critical Reading, 643 in Math, and 656 in Writing. FASNY opened an IB Diploma track in 2015 and will graduate its first IB cohort in June 2017. Colleges and universities on both sides of the Atlantic recognize and seek out graduates with a FASNY education, and our list of college acceptances is disproportionately skewed to the finest institutions in the world.

What programs does the French-American School offer?

In pre-school (3 to 6 years old), the double language immersion program brings children to bilingualism. In grades 1 through 10, students follow a rigorous bilingual program which combines official French and best-in-class American curricula. In grades 11 and 12, students have the option to take either the International Diploma Program track taught in English or bilingually, or to continue with the French Baccalaureate track taught in French or bilingually. FASNY is accredited by the New York State Department of Education, the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS), the French Ministry of Education, and the International Baccalaureate Organization. FASNY students graduate with both a High School Diploma, and either the French Baccalaureate or the IB Diploma.

What sets the French-American School apart from other language programs?

At FASNY, we don’t teach a foreign language: we bring preschool children to academic bilingual fluency in French and English. This means that our students are more than just able to carry a fluent conversation in more than one language: they study in two languages, benefit from two educational systems, and are enriched by two different thought systems. They are more flexible intellectually and more adaptable culturally: they are the ultimate global citizen of tomorrow.

What can parents expect to see from the French-American School at the New York Baby Show?

FASNY will bring various documentation regarding our bilingual program (school magazine, school profile, curriculum guides, along with baby essentials you will love, and a slideshow featuring events and activities on our preschool campus in Scarsdale).

You’ll have the opportunity to meet our high school students, parent representatives, and members of our community.
