For someone unfamiliar with Happiest Baby, Inc., how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Happiest Baby is a mission-driven company dedicated to empowering parents to succeed at their most important job, raising healthy, happy children. We develop science-based products and services to enhance child well-being, and to help solve everyday parenting challenges.
Tell us about Happiest Baby. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
Based in Santa Monica, California, Happiest Baby, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Dr. Harvey Karp (pediatrician & child development specialist) with his wife and business partner, Nina Montée-Karp. Dr. Karp’s celebrated books and videos, “The Happiest Baby on the Block” and “The Happiest Toddler on the Block,” have helped millions of parents. His landmark theories relieve many stressful parenting challenges such as infant crying, poor sleep, and toddler tantrums. Thousands of certified Happiest Baby educators teach Dr. Karp’s work in hospitals and clinics across the country and in 20 other nations.
In 2015, Happiest Baby became a venture-backed company in order to launch its line of smart products, including SNOO. Happiest Baby is proud to be joined by several influential parent advocates and investors, including Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson, and Zoe Saldana in its goal to support families and reduce the tragic occurrences of postpartum depression, child abuse, and infant sleep death.
What are the most popular and newest products from Happiest Baby?
The SNOO smart sleeper that was launched in October 2016 and was created to help solve the #1 new parent stress: exhaustion. Sleep deprivation can trigger postpartum depression, marital conflict, and infant sleep deaths. And, from an employer’s perspective, reduces productivity and increases accidents and health care costs. SNOO offers the first major innovation in infant beds…in over 1000 years.
The SNOO quickly soothes infant crying and boosts sleep with the same rhythmic sensations babies enjoyed in the womb. The SNOO responds to crying by choosing the appropriate level of shushing and rocking most likely to calm the baby’s upset, just like an experienced parent.
In addition, SNOO’s patent pending swaddle makes it the only bed ever made that keeps babies safely on their back all night long. When securely attached to the bed, the swaddle prevents accidental rolling. That makes SNOO the only bed that complies with the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep recommendation. The AAP also warned that swaddled babies should never sleep on their stomach. They advise that wrapping—used to reduce crying and improve sleep—must stop as soon as a baby begins to roll. However, by securely attaching the baby to the bed, the SNOO gives babies all the benefits of swaddling without any risk of rolling.
The SNOO also helps parents learn their babies cues and figure out when their baby just wants a bit of soothing or needs more help such as a feeding or diaper change. Parents can manually change the soothing level by using a button or the SNOO app on the phone. If the SNOO can’t quickly calm a baby’s fussing—like when the baby is hungry or uncomfortable—it stops after just a couple of minutes and sends a signal that the baby needs more than just a little rocking and sound; the baby needs a parent’s special help.
Last, it is a beautiful sleeper, created by America’s #1 designer, Yves Behar.
What sets Happiest Baby apart in the baby marketplace?
In essence, SNOO is not so much a product as it is a service. It is a “virtual” nanny—available 24/7—to help whenever parents need time to take a shower, care for their toddler, or get an extra hour of sleep. Today, most people have absolutely no family support, and they can’t afford a nanny. One hundred years ago, all new parents had 3-4 “nannies” helping them: their mom, sister, cousin, etc. The SNOO is meant to help those families who are struggling with too little help and too much exhaustion.
What can parents expect from Happiest Baby at the New York Baby Show?
Dr. Karp will be speaking at the New York Baby Show about newborn sleep, the 5 S’s, and SNOO! We’ll be exhibiting and providing in-person demos of the product as well as answering any and all questions that people have.
