For someone unfamiliar with Honest Tea, how would you describe the brand and its core offerings?
Honest Tea is the nation’s top-selling organic bottled tea company. We make organic teas, juice drinks, lemonades, and zero-calorie sodas using Fair Trade Certified ingredients – like tea leaves and sugar – whenever we can. We seek to create and promote great-tasting organic beverages and extend economic opportunities to communities in need with honesty, integrity, sustainability, and great taste for all
Tell us about the Honest Tea’s background—how did it get started and how has it grown?
Honest Tea was founded in 1998 by Seth Goldman and Barry Nalebuff. After a run in NYC’s Central Park, Seth was thirsty but none of the beverages on the store shelf were appealing. Seth emailed his former Yale graduate school professor, Barry, recalling a discussion they had in class about a lack of less-sweet options in the beverage market. As fate would have it, Barry had just returned from a trip to India where he learned about high-quality tea leaves. Soon after, Seth quit his job, started Honest Tea out of his kitchen in Bethesda, MD, and received the first order from Fresh Fields (now Whole Foods Market) a few weeks later. In 2011, The Coca-Cola Company fully acquired Honest Tea, and there are passionate teams in both Atlanta, GA, and Bethesda, MD—as well as across the country and around the world–working on the brand.
What do consumers love about Honest Tea and what should parents know about it?
Consumers love Honest Tea’s commitment to transparency and honesty – both in its products and in its relationship with its consumers. All of Honest Tea’s products are USDA organic and the majority incorporate Fair Trade Certified ingredients.
Honest Tea’s line of organic Honest Kids juice drinks, which are being sampled at the New York Baby Show, are sweetened only with organic fruit juice and are 40 calories per pouch, another benefit that many parents love about our Honest Kids products.
What makes Honest Tea unique and different from other similar brands?
Honest Tea was the first to create an organic bottled tea as well as the first to create a Fair Trade Certified bottled tea. We’ve continued to innovate and bring organic beverages to store shelves, such as our line of Honest Kids drinks which we created in 2007.
What can parents except to see from Honest Tea at the New York Baby Show and in the future in general?
We’ll be sampling our newest addition to the Honest Kids family at the New York Baby Show: our organic Cherry Go Round! This variety just launched in April and is starting to hit shelves this month—so this is one of the first places where consumers can try it. We’re always thinking of new and exciting ways to give things an “Honest” twist, so stay tuned because we’ve got some pretty neat surprises in the works.
