For someone unfamiliar with MomsRising, how would you describe the organization’s mission and core offerings?
At MomsRising, we work tirelessly to increase family economic security, end discrimination against women and mothers, and build a nation in which families and businesses can thrive. One of our greatest victories has been playing a role in New York State, where lawmakers passed what will be the country’s strongest paid family leave program. When it begins taking effect on January 1, 2018, working families in the state will no longer have to choose between caring for their loved ones and risking their economic security.
The New York State Paid Family Leave Program will be a model for the country. When it’s fully phased in, in 2021, this law will provide New Yorkers with paid leave that they can use to bond with a new child, care for a loved one with a serious health condition or to help relieve family pressures when someone is called to active military service. The benefits to low-income families, and to communities of color, will be huge as these are the families least likely to have savings to cover periods of unpaid leave and least likely to have jobs that offer paid leave. The new state program will make it possible for many more women to breastfeed their babies, giving them a healthier start in life.
That is just one example of our work. We are an on-the-ground and online multicultural organization with more than a million members who are working not just for paid family leave, but also for earned sick days, affordable childcare, and for an end to the wage and hiring discrimination that penalizes so many mothers. We also advocate for better childhood nutrition, health care for all, toxic-free environments, breastfeeding rights so that all children can have a healthy start, and a national budget that reflects the contributions of women and moms.
Tell us about the organization’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
