We spoke with Dr. Moira Dillon, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology at New York University and Director of the Lab for the Developing Mind at New York University about what to expect from this top-tier organization at this year’s Baby Show!
What should expectant and new parents know about your lab and research?
How do infants and young children understand the world around them? At the Lab for the Developing Mind at New York University, directed by Professor Moira Dillon, Ph.D., we conduct fun activities with infants and children that help us to understand cognitive milestones in development, especially ones that underlie STEM learning. We offer parents and their children the opportunity to come visit our lab and contribute to scientific discovery. Together we can learn more about how our children’s magnificent minds grow!
What’s new in (in the past year) with your lab?
Since the lab opened in July 2017, we have aimed to engage local families who might be interested in participating in our studies. We have formed a partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics, and we have recently been awarded a prestigious grant from the National Science Foundation’s STEM Learning division, which will allow us to further contribute to educational and scientific programming in New York City.
What can families do to participate?
We invite families to visit us for short, one-time visits to our lab on NYU’s campus near Washington Square Park. Visits are tons of fun for the entire family! We have studies for infants and children from 4-months to 8-years of age and every child receives a special gift for participating. We’re open 9AM-5PM, seven days a week, and we’re happy to accommodate families’ busy schedules! Families can sign up here: labdevelopingmind.com/participate
Why should Baby Show attendees stop by your booth at the Baby Show Series this year?
As a research lab, we are excited to provide parents with expertly crafted and informed material on the cognitive development of infants and children and to discuss what our research teaches us about how children learn. We will also have fun child and adult-friendly activities related to our studies at our booth that can inspire at-home activities.
