For someone unfamiliar with Sleep Sense, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Sleep Sense was created with the goal of helping families to get the sleep they need, specifically focused on families of infants and toddlers. At the very heart of what we do is the belief that sleep is one of the single most important gifts we give our children. A well-rested family is at the very foundation of a healthy, happy, functional and productive life.
What is the background of Sleep Sense? When did you start it, and how has it evolved since then?
I started Sleep Sense in 2003 about a year after having my first child. Charlie, our son, was waking numerous times every night. My husband and I attempted everything under the sun in our attempts to help him, but nothing had any effect. Exhausted and at the end of my rope, I started doing my own research and developed a strategy based on my analysis of what I’d discovered.
Within days of implementing these new practices, Charlie started sleeping through the night, and I could not have been happier. While walking him through the park one day, my husband casually mentioned that the techniques I had used were so effective that I should write a book, and The Sleep Sense Program was on its way.
Since then, I have written four more books focused on solving various sleep and parenting-related challenges. The Sleep Sense Program has helped over 57,000 families to get the sleep they need, and I provide advice to parents worldwide through my blog, social media, YouTube channel, and upcoming weekly podcast.
What are the most popular and/or newest services from Sleep Sense?
Our most popular offering remains our original Sleep Sense Program, which sells, on average, 300 copies per week. We recently released Solve Your Sleep, which is a comprehensive sleep improvement program aimed at adults, and Kids: The Manual, a guide to solutions for the most common issues that parents encounter.
What sets Sleep Sense apart from other parental assistance programs on the market?
I think one of the biggest differences with the Sleep Sense Program is the step-by-step approach for dealing with the sleep challenges. Yes, there is some background as to why your little one hasn’t been sleeping well, and explanation as to how the changes we are going to make will work to improve the situation, but the real difference is in the plan. I also hear all the time from my clients that the 14-day coaching videos are a huge help. Having an update every morning on what happened the night before, and what to look for going into the next day, really helps people stay the course.
What can parents expect to see from Sleep Sense at the New York Baby Show?
I am a teacher first and foremost. I love to educate people, especially around this wonderful, mysterious, and sometimes frustrating thing called sleep! I believe that if we just knew more about our own sleep needs, the sleep needs of our children and how to create great sleep habits, we could avoid many of the problems from occurring in the first place. I hope to share this knowledge with parents at the baby show so they can take a few tips home to implement right away.
