For someone unfamiliar with Northwell Health, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) is New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer. With 21 hospitals and nearly 450 outpatient practices, we serve more than 1.8 million people annually in the metro New York area and beyond. Our 61,000 employees work to change health care for the better. We’re making breakthroughs in medicine at the Feinstein Institute. We’re training the next generation of medical professionals at the visionary Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and the School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. We offer health insurance through CareConnect and have more than 100 medical specialties.
What is the background of Northwell Health? When was it started and how has it evolved since then?
Northwell Health’s roots date back to the 1992 merger of North Shore University Hospital and Glen Cove Hospital, and expanded further in 1997 with the merger of the North Shore Health System and LIJ Medical Center. Over time, that network has grown to more than 21 hospitals. In transforming the landscape of healthcare delivery across the region, Northwell provides a full continuum of care to people of all ages through prevention and early detection services, wellness and community services, hundreds of primary and specialty care providers, outpatient physician practices, urgent and emergency care, a full gamut of behavioral health services, and a vast network of rehabilitation, home health, hospice, skilled nursing and end-of-life care. The health system also has its own license to sell commercial health insurance to individuals, families and employers through CareConnect.
What are the most popular and/or newest services and products available from Northwell Health?
From cardiology, oncology, neuroscience, orthopedics, behavioral health and pediatrics, to all the many disciplines to which we are dedicated, Northwell Health provides seamless, coordinated care to our service area of more than 7 million New Yorkers. Our team strives to change and save lives by delivering compassionate, expert care in safe and comfortable environments. Our reach is expanded through our national and international affiliates.
What sets Northwell Health apart from other medical companies on the market?
In addition to world-class clinical care, the health system pursues a visionary approach to medical education, highlighted by the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, which opened in 2011 as New York’s first allopathic medical school in about 40 years, and the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. As an integrated, academic health system, North Shore-LIJ offers 120 residency and fellowship programs that serve as a training ground for more than 1,600 future physicians, many of whom hone their skills at Northwell’s Patient Safety Institute (the nation’s largest patient simulation center) and Bioskills Education Center. The health system’s Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine confers PhD degrees to highly trained young physicians interested in careers in biomedical research, offering them an individually tailored, three-year program with a strong emphasis on translational research. In cultivating a culture of continuous learning for employees, North Shore-LIJ developed the first and largest corporate university in the healthcare industry: the Center for Learning and Innovation.
As the research enterprise of Northwell Health, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is home to more than 1,500 faculty and staff who pursue research in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, psychiatric disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, sepsis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, human genetics, leukemia, lymphoma, neuroimmunology and medicinal chemistry. With more than $40 million a year in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, the Feinstein Institute has successfully competed in an era of tight federal funding to be among the top 6 percent of the nation’s 3,400 research institutions receiving NIH funds for research. As evidence of their commitment to community health and patient-focused research, Feinstein scientists and Northwell physicians enroll more than 15,000 people every year in about 2,100 active clinical research studies.
