For someone unfamiliar with Ubbi, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Ubbi is synonymous with functionality, convenience, and modernity. We want to make sure that every Ubbi products makes parents’ life easier. The Ubbi diaper pail shows our core offering because it’s one of the few pails that works, looks good, and doesn’t require any special bags. For parents, this convenience doesn’t only save them tons of money over the life of the pail, but also time and energy otherwise spent going to the store or online to get those refills! Most diaper pail companies do make their money on the refills, similar to razor companies with blades or printer companies with ink cartridges. At Ubbi, we made the pail so it’s easy for the parents to use and it looks good in a nursery. The same philosophy applied to our 3-in-1 potty—so after parents are done with diapering, they only have to buy one product instead of three to go through the different phases of potty training.
What is the background of Ubbi? When was it started, and how has it evolved since then?
Ubbi started in 2011. It is owned by Pearhead, a well-established baby gifts and keepsakes brand that started in 1999. The need to come up with a diaper pail came from the owner, Tom, who as a father couldn’t find a diaper pail on the market that didn’t smell. With his engineering background, he started conceptualizing the Ubbi diaper pail, and working with a bunch of engineers and industrial designers to come up with the very first steel diaper pail. Since then, we have always kept on using our innovative thinking to come up with functional and convenient products with a modern look—all to make busy parents’ lives easier.
What are the most popular and/or newest services from Ubbi?
The most popular is still our flagship diaper pail—the grey one outsells all the other colors by far. We launched two new lines of products last year—expanding our diapering selection with a diaper caddy and wipes dispenser, but also branching out into potty training and feeding. This year, we are very excited to launch our new bath collection and expanding our feeding collection further. We have over 20 products in development! It is quite exciting and there is certainly never a dull moment!
What sets Ubbi apart from other baby and childcare product companies on the market?
Ubbi is a real trendsetter. When we came on the market, the only diaper pails parents could find were white, unattractive, plastic buckets. The diaper pail was something you almost wanted to hide at the very back of your nursery. With Ubbi, we opened up a whole new world of functional products that can also be stylish. The can of steel was introduced with its sleek design featuring clean and contemporary lines and was initially available in seven colors! After that, other companies followed and came up with colored pails. Since everyone does colors now, we have decided to keep on being innovative and have come up with limited edition patterns. The Ubbi diaper pail is now available with chevron, stars and heart patterns. We want to make sure to keep up with the most recent nursery trends and will keep on coming up with different patterns to match the sophisticated taste of today’s modern parents.
What can parents expect to see from Ubbi at the New York Baby Show?
Parents can expect to see our latest limited edition pails and our newest line of products. We wish we could have had our bath line to showcase, but product development made from scratch is a bumpy road. It always take twice the time to come up with something perfect so we won’t have those available until the end of the Summer—so do stay tuned!
