For someone unfamiliar with the culture of Clek how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
At Clek, we are all about the ride. All kinds of rides, including the one through life. When we first started out on this journey, we had a clear direction. Forward, but with different thinking. Because how you get there matters. Our thinking is design thinking– not only products but also experiences. Parenting comes with compromises. We get that, but we don’t believe you need to compromise when it comes to child passenger safety. Comfort, safety, convenience and style can co-exist without sacrifice. Easy task? Nope. An important one? Absolutely.
What’s the background of the company? When did it start? How has it evolved over time?
Chris Lumley, Founder and President, was part of a group at Magna International, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. Chris became aware of an early-stage project that Magna’s seating group was collaborating on with a national research initiative, funded by the government, on booster seat safety and, over the course of 2006, championed the commercialization of this project…and Clek was born.
Clek’s automotive background resulted in a very different approach to child safety seat design. Using automotive best practices, Clek builds child seats to look, feel and function like real vehicle seats, while keeping safety and style top of mind.
After launching four booster seats (Oto (no longer available), Olli, Ozzi + Oobr), Chris was given the opportunity to purchase the entity that he had championed for the past 4 years. So in early 2010 he and his wife, Jennifer Lumley, made the move and took over Clek. Based in Toronto, Canada, Clek has since grown its product line to include two convertible seats, Foonf (2012) and Fllo (2014), and has built a growing and successful team that works hard to keep things moving forward. Clek is currently sold in 13+ countries outside of North America and is continuing to grow.
What are the most popular and/or newest products from Clek?
The Foonf and Fllo are currently our best sellers, but that in no way means that Oobr and Olli themselves aren’t loved by many! Truth be told, we have an amazing lineup of products that span across each stage in car seats.
What sets Clek apart from other car seat companies?
Clek has made a conscious decision to manufacture their products in North America. Yes, it may cost a little more to do business on our side of the pond, but we think it’s worth it. Not only are we supporting businesses here (most of their suppliers are also North American based), we are also closer to the process to better ensure the high quality you can expect from a Clek product.
Clek also keeps the environment at the forefront of the decisions we make daily. We believe that as producers we should be responsible for everything we make and put into this world. It starts with our design process, on to the selection of the materials we use. Clek has formed strategic partnerships in both Canada and the United States to manage the disassembly and recycling or reintroduction of the plastic, metal, foam and fabric components into other products.
What can parents expect to see from Clek at the New York Baby Show?
Parents will have the opportunity to get hands-on with all of Clek’s 2016 line up, as well as chat with an on staff Child Passenger Safety Technician about Clek seats or car seat safety questions in general.
