To learn more about Tot Squad, we caught up with founder Jennifer Beall Saxton.
For parents who might be unfamiliar with Tot Squad, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Tot Squad comes to the rescue of busy parents everyday by cleaning and repairing their strollers and car seats. We offer services at our Midtown East location and also provide pick-up and drop-off service in Manhattan and Brooklyn. We have four cleaning packages that use natural, non-toxic cleaners from the Honest Company, and can repair most stroller brands, including Bugaboo, Orbitbaby, Uppababy, and Maclaren.
How frequently should parents clean their baby gear?
We recommend parents clean their gear every three months to keep it not only looking great, but also in tip-top shape from a health and safety standpoint. Car seat buckles can get sticky and difficult to unbuckle in an emergency and strollers can harbor dangerous bacteria like E. Coli and Salmonella. By regularly maintaining your baby gear, it can extend its useful life and be passed down to siblings or families in need. (We are happy to help donate your used strollers to the Good+ Foundation!).
Where are you located? Do you make house calls?
Outside of our NYC location at 52nd Street and 3rd Avenue, we are headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, and service the greater Southern California area. We recently sold our first franchise and will be opening in Washington DC next month, with many more locations opening throughout the year. We offer house call services and also do special events with preschools, daycares, churches, apartment and office buildings.
What inspired you to found Tot Squad, and how long have you been in business?
I founded Tot Squad in 2010 as a way to help busy parents. While getting my MBA at Northwestern, I did a survey of over 1000 parents and caregivers and more than 60 percent said they wished their baby gear was cleaner, but just didn’t have the time or energy to clean it. So many of my friends and family had young children and I saw them struggling to juggle it all. As we have grown into the leading national brand for baby gear services, we have established partnerships with major stroller & car seat manufacturers, retailers, and non-profits. Last year, we won 2nd place out of 500+ businesses in a global competition for millennials in franchising, with CNBC calling us the hottest new franchise concept!
What can parents expect to see from you at the New York Baby Show?
We will be doing stroller cleanings for the first 100 people at the show each day. A vacuum and wipe-down is free, or show attendees can upgrade to deeper cleanings for steaming, sanitizing or stain removal with $40 off regular prices. We take care of the dirty work because we love helping families!
