For someone unfamiliar with the Wetherby-Pembridge School, how would you describe the school’s mission and core offerings?
The Wetherby-Pembridge School is a British independent school for boys and girls aged 2 1/2 to 14. The school is located at 7 East 96th Street. Our vision is to prepare students for the world of tomorrow, enabling young learners to enter an ever more competitive world of education with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed. Wetherby-Pembridge uniquely combines the strengths of the British and American school systems to offer a unique option to families seeking both academic rigor and a forward-thinking approach to teaching. At the heart of our school are the traditional Wetherby values of excellence, citizenship, politeness, and social awareness.
Our core offerings:
In Preschool, our extensive play-based curriculum is built upon the British Early Years Foundation Stage, where a careful balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities encourage the children to explore and discover a wide range of subjects and gain preschool skills with minimum pressure, but lots of fun.
From Kindergarten, our curriculum is built on the English National Curriculum, generally considered to be one year ahead of a traditional American curriculum, complemented with core additions from exceptional New York City inquiry-based teaching.
Tell us about the school’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
The Wetherby-Pembridge School will be opening its doors to the first cohort of founding families in September 2017. Our Founding Head of School is Kate Bailey, former Senior Deputy Head of Wetherby Prep School.
The school is backed by the prestigious Alpha Plus Group, which owns and operates 15 schools and three colleges in the U.K., including the well-known Wetherby School and Pembridge Hall.
What programs does the Wetherby-Pembridge School offer? Are there any new programs on the horizon?
We are currently enrolling for preschool through first grade for entry in September 2017. As the school grows organically, we will offer a full kindergarten through fifth grade (U.K. Years: 1-6) program, followed by sixth to eighth grades (U.K. Years: 7-9).
What sets the Wetherby-Pembridge School apart in the education industry?
Our advanced curriculum and our strong values, which are supported by a proven track record of success with our schools in the U.K., are among two of the biggest traits that set us apart.
In addition, we are one of the only schools in NYC to offer the benefits of a single-sex education for male and female students under one roof. Our school begins as co-ed in preschool and transitions to a single-sex model in kindergarten. The all-boys division, Wetherby, and the all-girls division, Pembridge, will operate in the same building, offering students many opportunities to interact while creating an environment where children feel more comfortable and encouraged to pursue whatever subjects most interest them.
What can parents expect from the Wetherby-Pembridge School at the New York Baby Show?
Parents are welcome to come and learn more about life at the school, the benefits of the Early Year Foundation Stage curriculum for their child, along with just meeting and chatting with our friendly school team.
